A Story of Bhiksu 00 Robbers Attaining Buddhahood (Western Wei dynasty) - 3
Silk Scroll Copy of the fresco at the west end on the south wall in Cave No. 296 of Mogao Grottoes, Dunhuang. The painting depicts the story from The Sutra of the Great Means by Which Buddha Recompenses the Favor of His Parents, recording that there are 500 robbers making trouble in the country named Qiaosaluo (in sound) but caught by the KingY army. They are tortured so much that their eyeballs are removed before being sent to the woods. Sakyamuni helps them by blowing incense and medicinal aroma to restore their eyesight so that all of them are converted to Buddhism and become monks. Since then, they live in remote mountains and forests to practise dhyana and samadhi, and finally attain Buddhahood themselves. The painting is done like a picture-story book on a scroll with a battle between the robbers and the KingY army at the beginning, followed by sequent plots, with the setting and emotions perfectly harmonized.
