Zhang Daqian
Avalokitesvara (early Tang period)
Silk Scroll
From which Dunhuang grotto the copy was made is unclear. The Avalokitesvara wears his hair in high wispy bun, with long hair dropping down to shoulders. He wears the celestial clothes in a slant style. There are bracelets and jewels around his neck, arms and wrists. He wears a long white shawl. In his left hand there is a pure water bottle. His right arm bends before the chest. He wears an orange silk skirt wounded with colored ribbon. The eyes of the figure were not drawn, but demitint coloration was already done. This technique helps display vividly the human skin and create cubic sense. The lines of AvalokitesvaraY clothes were done with demitint coloration technique, which can make the wrinkles of clothes look light, soft and real. The painting has clearcut color gradation and a cubic sense.
