15. Lou Lim Ieoc Chinese Garden , A Suzhou-Style Garden
Selected as a classified place of interest, Lou Lim Ieoc Garden was initially designed as a leisure and amusement park. The original site was a vegetable garden, which was purchased by a wealthy Chinese, Lou Wah Siu, in 1870. His eldest son, Lou Lim Ieoc, invited architect Liu Jiliu from Xiangshan to design a Chinese garden in the famous Suzhou garden and landscaping style. As Lou Wah Siu was the 9th child in the family, the garden was called both ŽouY Garden˙˙ or ˙˙th LouY Garden˙˙ However, following the deaths of Lou Wah Siu, and Lou Lim Ieoc, the family fortunes fell into decline and the garden changed hands. Later, the government purchased the garden, which was repaired, renovated and reopened to the public on 28th September 1974, with the official name ćardim Lou Lim Ieoc˙˙ It was selected as one of eight major attractions in Macau in 1992.
An interesting anecdote is that in May 1912 Sun Yat-sen made a visit to Macau, and at the hostY invitation, he was accommodated in the Epring Grass Hall˙˙in LouY Garden, where he met with both Chinese and Portuguese dignitaries.
